Tojo-tei House
This is the only piece of architecture owned by the Tokugawa family during the Meiji period that remains almost completely untouched. This complex was designated an Important Cultural Property by the Japanese government. It was the private residence of Tokugawa Akitake , a younger brother of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the 15th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate government.
Completed in 1844, this residential property holds nine buildings with a total of 23 rooms. Quality Japanese cedar was used lavishly to construct the buildings.
They can be divided roughly into three categories of use: ① by guests, ② by family members, and ③ by staff members.
